Thinning Hair Remedies For Female Pattern Baldness
Finasteride is considered to be the very best among the thinning hair remedies by the American Hair Loss Association. Finasteride meant to combat male pattern baldness.
Finasteride (the generic name for Propecia) is the treatment that will reduce DHT systematically throughout your entire body. Finasteride at a dose of 1mg will reduce DHT levels up to 70% (source: Dr. Robert Bernstein, Professor of Dermatology at Columbia University). Finasteride is available by prescription only for adult males, females should not use finasteride. The normal dose of finasteride is 1mg, taken everyday. Although finasteride is available from overseas pharmacies, I highly suggest that you purchase it from a legitimate American pharmacy with a prescription from your doctor.
Rogaine/Minoxidil (FDA-approveed for pattern baldness)
Minoxidil is an FDA approved thinning hair remedy that is clinically proven to regrow hair. Minoxidil, also commonly known as its patented name ‘Rogaine’ is an over-the-counter hair loss medication that is clinically proven to prevent hair loss.
Rogaine or minoxidil is a clinically proven hair loss remedy. Minoxidil or Rogaine is used one or two times daily. Using Rogaine also reduces how much hair you lose in the shower. A controlled research analysis conducted by the “Internatonal Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons” explains that adult males that used five percent Rogaine for a year – reduced the amount of hair lost while showering from a mean of 69.7 hairs lost to a mean of 33.8 hairs lost. This marks over a half reduction of hair lost.
Azelaic Acid
Azelaic acid is one of the most beneficial thinning hair remedies. Azelaic acid is also clinically proven to inhibit DHT when topically applied to your skin (or your scalp in this case).
To topically inhibit DHT, you need to use a minoxidil solution that also contains 5% azelaic acid. According to a clinical study published in the 2005 “American Journal of Clinical Dermatology,” azelaic acid can inhibit up to 100% of scalp DHT. If you have not used minoxidil before, start with Perfect Image’s 5% minoxidil w/ 5% azelaic acid. I’ve tried about 20 different minoxidil formulas, these are the best. They aren’t oily and dry super quick. The reviews on Amazon.com are overwhelmingly favorable. In my opinion, azelaic acid is the very best topical solution to block DHT. Better than topical spironolactone (which functions a bit differently).
Ketoconazole (in shampoo)
Ketoconazole, an anti-androgen ingredient in shampoo, is clinically proven to combat hair loss and is one of the most effective thinning hair remedies. As of October 2011, Ketoconazole is the only shampoo ingredient that is clinically proven to prevent genetic pattern hair loss. Ketoconazole, like azelaic acid can prevent the synthesis of testosterone to DHT. This compound is the only shampoo ingredient that is among the legitimate thinning hair remedies. In a study published in the journal of “Dermatology” Belgian researchers concluded that ketoconazole, when applied topically to the scalp in a shampoo carrier, was as effective as 2% minoxidil in the “long-term” treatment of genetic pattern androgenic thinning hair. In a study published in the 2005 “Journal of Dermatology,” Japanese researchers found that ketoconazole, applied topically, can stimulate hair growth and aid the treatment of thinning hair. I use a ketoconazole shampoo every other day, it definitely reduces the amount of hair lost when showering.
Spironolactone (Topically Applied)
Spironolactone is also clinically established to prevent hair loss. Spironolactone, typically known as a hypertension or high blood pressure medication, when topically applied can block 5-ar scalp hair receptors from DHT – the primary cause of hair loss. Since DHT cannot attach to receptors, hair thinning cannot occur. A 2010 study in the “Journal of Dermatological Clinics,” describes how spironolactone, when taken orally, can reduce androgen levels in women. Spironolactone, orally ingested, is not considered among viable thinning hair remedies because of it feminizing potential effects.
